Big Tease reveal & BIG Let down!!!!

I am not amused!!!!

This is difficult for me to say after all my teasing but....
my wonderful, wonderful unknown make is a horrendous disaster and a BIG disappointment.

I felt so inspired and I imagined it was going to be such a fabulous make too. It is a disaster and looks like a sack. ... so disappointing!!!

Zelna's coat  not mine!
My project was a Granny square jacket and I received my inspiration from Zelna's pattern here on ZootyOwls blog . Zelna offers a free pattern and although I had other ideas for colours and square design I kept to the pattern, hooks, type of yarn and size of squares religiously for the jacket size that I wanted.

My idea was a big stash buster but when I got to attaching the first sleeve to the body and back and then trying it on well..... what can I say except it looked flipping awful!!!
I'm afraid I don't even want to show you my effort...it is rubbish!!!   The image here is as it should have been!!!

At present I have just thrown it in a cupboard I am that annoyed!

Well done though Steph from Show and Tell and Meredith  from Mereknits as they guessed correctly:

Meredith commented "How about a granny jacket?"
and Steph said " Are you making an Amazing technicolour dream coat!" .

Apologies to all who have been waiting for the great reveal and only got a BIG let down!!!!  )-:

  1. Oh Amanda ..That is such a shame. I fear you will never love it. So, I would leave it in the cupboard for a while and then take it out again and rethink. I am so sorry this has not lived up to your dream xx

    1. I have taken your advice and done just that Linda. Am preparing a post now to show off what I have done with it. I was so annoyed at the time I could have thrown it out but I'm glad I didn't!

  2. Call it a dressing gown for the cooler weather. It definitely looks Hippyish. Would a belt make it sit better on you?

    1. It isn't even decent enough for a dressing gown Mum....but I am sorting it now. I have frogged the lot and come up with something acceptable.

  3. Dear Amanda,

You have all my sympathy. Us creatives have such fabulous ideas and become wildly excited about them. Almost every creative process seems to go through similar stages of thrill and dispair with a fairly good outcome. Those projects which turn out as disasters are best thrown in the cupboard and left for a while. I'm pretty sure in a few days time your wonderful creative mind will start ticking again and you'll come up with something even better.

Of course, I really must ask: are you quite sure it's as bad as you think?

    Hugs from France,

    Stephanie

    1. Dear Stephanie Thank you so much for your encouragement!! How right you are that is exactly how I feel and I did as you suggested I threw it in the cupboard for a few days and I didn't even crochet for those days either! That was hard as my hands just didn't know what to do with themselves!!! :-)
It wasn't bad you know more like but horrendous but I think I have that sorted now and will be posting soon.

      keep well

  4. What a shame, it is so annoying when things like this happen, I really can relate.

Hopefully after a while in the cupboard you will come up with a new idea for it.

Many thanks for calling in. I finally took it out of the cupboard and frogged the lot. It is a decent looking make now and I'll be posting about it soon.

  5. It is disappointing when you plan and make and get excited and it falls from your expectations. Why don't you turn it into a blanket? The colours look gorgeous, it is a shame to toss it aside xxx

Many thanks for your suggestion. I finally dug it out of the cupboard and turned it into a blanket for my granddaughter's bedroom. It was the obvious solution and in fact looks quite that bit better.

  6. Such a bummer, although from here it looks fun. I made a big coat/sweater from thick Noro yarn that cost me a billion dollars and when I finally got finished I wet it down with wool wash like the owner of the yarn store told me and the whole thing grew to the size a giant could wear. I had to take the whole thing apart, re-wet the yarn in hanks and then I put it all away for another year. I was so upset and the yarn cost so much. But eventually I made it and I have never let a drop of water touch it. Lesson learned. Can any of it be salvaged? Can you take the sleeves off and make it a vest? Can you use the back for a pillow?
    Hugs,
    Meredith

    1. Goodness! That sounds like a mammoth effort. I'm not sure I'd have your tenacity in this case. As it is I have taken it out of the cupboard and getting it sorted. I can't let that get me down!!!
Many thanks for your always well received comments.

  7. Dear Amanda
We all have projects like this - huge excitement initially, only to have huge disappointment in the end (I have a box full of polymer clay experiments which were disasters!) Throwing it in the cupboard is a good plan and when you eventually get it out again, there may be a way to save it which comes to you, or you may find something else to do with the squares that you like more...
    Best wishes

Throwing it in the cupboard worked and me feeling somewhat guilty about just leaving it there too! I have converted it into something else which I am preparing a post about.

  8. Oh poor Amanda. :-(. I think we've all had a similar experience at least once if we're honest. Maybe you can use parts of it for other projects once you can bear to look at it again.

  10. What a shame you don't like it Amanda, I think we have all been there I made myself a cardigan a couple of years ago I was that excited to actually get something finished for myself but when I tried it on it just looked awful, it's still in the wardrobe and I will try to pull it out and use the yarn for something else when I can bring myself too. But I do love your jacket and big and baggy is in right now are you sure it really looks as bad as you think? xxx

  11. Maybe it's different from what you were expecting but perhaps when you try it on again your expectations will be different and it won't seem so bad. X

  12. Oh, that's disappointing . I can understand how all that makes you feel low. But it's looking very nice.

    1. Hello Charlotte
I have certainly been put off of crochet garments for the present! That was much too much work and a bitter disappointment! However I've sorted it now into something more practical and it is still a stash buster.
      Many thanks for your comments

  14. Let it in the cupboard for just a while ….. then open it, collect your jacket and look it with different eyes !!!!! I don't think it's so bad after all and it has not to be as the one you have followed the pattern : your personal touch made it different !!!!

  16. I love the jacket, but I understand I did that with a poncho earlier in the year. Must drag it out and see.... Hope it will grow on you later.

  18. Must be our planets are out of alignment--I went to make Chocolate Macarons and added the almond flour mixture before the granulated sugar--ruin the whole thing! I just threw it out and will do them another day when I'm not cranky, XOXO

  22. Amanda my love, you are just not selling it right. It is FAN-FLIPPING-TASTIC!! the fact that it looks like a sack is completely irrelevant, the fact that it is beautiful and bloody amazing means that it stands on its own just looking that pretty, get it out the cupboard, take some more pictures and show it off, you have done good girl...never forget xx and show us the back, sides, arms, buttons, everything...now...right now!!

  23. Have you blocked it? Apparently blocking is supposed to make everything better. ;)

I do know how you feel. This is one reason I make mostly accessories! I'm too much of a coward to put the time into a garment that may disappoint me. It takes courage to tackle a garment, and you obviously have that. I agree with all the comments above - it may not be as bad as you think. I hope it will turn out better than you think. The inspiration photo is indeed stunning.

    1. Hi there
I didn't get around to blocking it as I was so disgusted with the results. I finally dragged it out of the cupboard and converted it into something else. At least I am happier with the results this time.

  24. Oh no! I am so unhappy for you. Maybe it can be fixed? If you come back and look at it another day you might see that it's either not as bad as you think or that there is something you can do to make it more like you wanted in to be. I hope so. Your hard work should not go to waste. *hugs* for you xox
